With a career spanning over 30 years in film and television, John Cavill is a much sought after Main Unit and 2nd Unit Director of Photography. His current focus is feature films and drama for television. And since 1986, John has been a Steadicam owner/operator. View his General Showreel
Feature Films
Working in both 16mm and 35mm, his feature films include the famous The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the well known King Kong, River Queen and Bridge to Teribithia, and most recently Show of Hands which was shot in HD.
Television Series
John launched this side of his career with 2nd Unit and Main Unit Director of Photography on Hercules, The Legendary Journeys and then onto Xena Warrior Princess from 1997 to 1999 and in January 2001 worked Main Unit on Street Legal.
Commercials
John’s craftsmanship has also seen him work on high profile brand TVCs like COKE, NZ Navy, Orca and Vogels.
History
After training as a cameraman with the Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand for four years, he moved on to Senior Lighting Cameraman for Northern Television in 1982 till 1986. From there till 2nd Unit on Hercules, The Legendary Journeys in 1995 he was a freelance Director of Photography. John purchased his first Steadicam in 1990, adding a second one in 1994 and to this day is still a Steadicam owner/operator.
